TOTAL INVESTMENT – 15.5 units

R2- Our first race to bet into on the day, I like the SA visitor Party Crasher. This fella resumed in a 1400M event at Murray Bridge a few weeks back, he raced a little upside down that day and has been given a nice time to prepare for the step up in trip here. The astute Hickmott yard have targeted this race, and they find very moderate opposition. The $8 currently on offer appeals.

The favourite and ultra-consistent Makdane will be the toughest to beat, he draws perfectly in barrier 1. Williams to ride and his run at Caulfield recently tops him off nicely for this.

Giggenbach is racing in great heart, she draws well and will hold her form well. The risk with her is this is her 6th run in the prep.

Hot Too Go was a good winner at The Valley recently, a repeat of that has him in the mix.

Backing #10 Party Crasher (1.5 win units)

R3- The best bet on the card stumps up here with Arabian Prince, this improving colt missed a start in the Derby on Saturday when first emergency. I gave him an each way chance in that race and he finds a much easier assignment here. His form lines are around horses like Options and Autumn Mystery; these horses would be in red odds in this type of race. There are several on pace horses to assist with a tempo that will set the race up nicely for him. The $4 seems luxurious.

Matahga is a nicely bred son of Tivaci that will have derived nice benefit from its first up run, he should get a nice run in transit and may provide some opposition. He also handles soft tracks well.

Aitu is lightly raced and seems above average, he is looking to get out in trip here and is way better than a $20 chance.

Champagne Hero will look to control the race from the front and drops in grade from its recent efforts in Sydney, whilst he is a chance I couldn’t take anything like what is currently on offer.

Backing #9 Arabian Prince (3 win units)

R4- A bit of a lacklustre race here and not one where I want to be overly involved.

Pallaton is the rightful favourite and leading chance. He has had two runs from a small let up and his recent effort when running 2nd to the promising Skyglider was encouraging. He draws well, gets JMac, and drops slightly in grade, he will be tough to toss.

Aleppo Pine is the best performed runner, he is hard fit, will appreciate the drop back to 1000M, and gets Shinn to steer. I have him marked shorter than the $8 currently on offer.

Street Artist has been excellent in winning its latest 2 starts since getting the snip, being drawn 8 might be a blessing, if he can get some early cover and be produced at the 200M. There isn’t much between these 3 horses.

One at huge odds worth putting into your exotics is Blethyn, he will have benefitted greatly from his first up run and could be storming home late here at huge odds.

No Bet

R5- The second of the staying events for the day and there aren’t too many inspiring types amongst this lot.

Don Diego De Vega comes out on top, his recent performance in the Bendigo Cup was good enough to win this. He gets the rails draw, Micky Dee sticks from last start, the stable are flying, and the distance shouldn’t prove a problem. At $10 he is worth a small ticket.

Golden Century has shown nice improvement as he has had his trips increased, I think he has the most natural ability in the field, he has some naughty traits though. Once he puts it all together you will see a nice stayer.

Cleveland is lightly raced for an 8yo and hasn’t been too far away in some of the better staying races; he is hard fit now and a big run wont surprise. The $23 available is over the odds.

Litzdeel is bred for this trip and is racing well, she is a mare with good ability although the price is too skinny for me. She is one of the top chances though.

Backing #3 Don Diego De Vega (1 win unit) #1 Cleveland (0.5 win unit)

R6- Kingswood is the one for me here, its run when resuming behind Golden Path suggested that he had returned in great order. From that they sent him to Sydney where he didn’t disgrace himself in a tougher field than he meets here. It draws perfectly to get a run just behind the speed and it should be strong late.

Major Beel hasn’t won for some time but is very good when things go his way. First up he was given very little peace when racing on speed and held on well enough. He could get a more cushy run here and may prove tough to run down at big odds.

Real Class is a lightly raced Waller trained mare, who is reaching peak fitness now. She can improve markedly here.

Unspoken is another who can improve dramatically also, at his best he would beat these easily.

Backing #3 Kingswood (1.5 win units)

R7- The Cup and what a race it promises to be! As with many years, there are multiple chances. One thing is for sure, if you find the winner you will be well rewarded.

River Of Stars is my top pick, its run in the Caulfield Cup surprised many especially those close to the horse. They always had this race as the target and for him to run as well as he did was a massive bonus. Draws to stay out of trouble, weighted perfectly, will handle a soft track and the distance poses no issue.

Valiant King is another with very little weight to carry and comes off recent excellent runs. He will settle around midfield and has an excellent turn of foot; with even luck he is in the finish.

Further comes with good UK form and follows a pattern from past winners who have beaten the handicapper with very few runs as a northern hemisphere 3yo. Distance and an affected track are perfect, as is having an excellent local jockey Micky Dee to ride.

Onesmoothoperator was strong in the Moonee Valley Cup, he appeared to have plenty up his sleeve with that win and he is a live chance.

Middle Earth has a sense of ‘Maher timing’ about it and is better than a 50/1 chance.

Half Yours has been outstanding lately and should be respected, the $6 is too short for me though.

Others I will be throwing in my trifecta as place chances are Al Riffa, Meydaan, Absurde, Flatten The Curve, Goodie Two Shoes, and Royal Supremacy.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Backing #21 River Of Stars (1.5 win units), #24 Valiant King (1 win unit), Further (0.5 win unit)

R8- As is usually the trend, the race after the cup is a lottery, many a roughie has won this race over the years. A field job in the quaddy.

Navy Pilot is the top pick, its racing well, draws softly and gets JMac. The 1400M is its pet trip too.

Pictor wasn’t suited last start in Sydney, the fact that they have sent it to Melbourne to contest this suggests its here for good reason, the $23 is overs too.

Ludlum has been impressive in both its starts; it rises in class although all indications are that this is well within its grasp.

Burma Star is another down from Sydney with the Waller team, he is racing in fine fettle and should be thereabouts.

No Bet

R9- The penultimate race on a big day and I’ve gone looking for a run on horses given the abundance of speed.

Coco Jamboo resumes and has a decent record when fresh. She should sit back off the quick tempo and run on hard late. Hopefully, Jamie Mott can find a nice smother from the wide barrier and give it every chance. The $26 appeals on an each way basis.

Gumdrops is ready to win, she should get a nice suck into the race and be strong late.

Roll On High is hard fit now, a 3rd up winner and has good numbers at the track/trip, its way better than a $34 chance.

Surfin’ Bird is flying at present (pardon the pun) it will make its own luck on the speed, and for its supporters, they will be hoping Fancify doesn’t annoy it all the way around. It’s a very real chance of happening so the $2.60 is way unders, in my humble opinion.

Pondalowie struggles to win, although recent efforts say another win mightn’t be too far away.

Backing #9 Coco Jamboo (1 win unit, 2 place units)

R10- The curtain comes down on another wonderful Cup Day and Sabaj is going to send us out as winners. This lightly raced gelding was excellent in the Silver Eagle and with better luck would have finished very close to the winner. Draws perfectly, gets Zahra, won its only start when 2nd up and at $3 is a bet.

Ndola is a very good horse who looks to be the only real threat, the barrier and its racing pattern says it gives to big a start to Sabaj for my liking.

Verdad is above average, and always races well fresh if there is an upset it could well be him.

Nostringsattached is a horse I have some time for, it’s better than a $41 chance.

Backing #8 Sabaj (2 win units)
