For the trivia buffs, it was Captain Frederick Standish, the Victorian Police Commissioner and VRC committeeman of the day, who came up with the idea of the Melbourne Cup back in the early 1860’s. A very interesting man to say the least, there is a movie somewhere in him and his exploits, well worth a deep dive into his character.
