This is a must win game for the Hawks as they are only one game clear of the Dogs and face the Lions in Brisbane next week. They are in great form after smashing the Pies by 64 points last week. If they lose this match and lose to the Lions at the Gabba in the final round they will probably miss playing finals in 2025. That would be a disappointing result for a team with excellent talent all over the ground. The Hawks have excellent talls and smalls up forward in Gunston, Lewis, Chol, Watson, Ginnivan, Moore and Dear and an excellent defence led by Sicily, Battle, Amon and Barrass and they don’t turn the ball over.
Will Day will be missed and Weddle is still out too. Jai Newcombe survived a horrible collision with Jeremy Howe last week and after passing the concussion test he went on to play an excellent game collecting 28 disposals and a goal. Lloyd Meek played well and kicked 3 goals and Dylan Moore one goal and Nick Watson two goals had a stack of the footy after being a little quiet over recent weeks. Jack Gunston keeps on keeping on with another four goals to give him 53 goals for the year, which is a great return.
The ruck battle will be interesting with Meek and Gawn both in good form. Sam Mitchell will continue to keep playing four talls in the forward line Chol, Dear, Lewis and Gunston and try and stretch the Demons defence.
The Demons found a new level of ball movement last week against the Dogs. They could easily have won this game following the sacking of their coach Simon Goodwin during the week. Clayton Oliver was powerful, and Jacob Van Rooyen was a threat up forward with his aerial presence. Harvey Langford looks like having a long career after showing the Demon faithful some big moments last week.
Stephen May will return after his three week suspension and Luker Kentfield may come in for his first game after kicking another bag of four goals in the VFL last week.
Hawthorn by 34 points
