Flemington 4/10/2025

Track – Good 4

Rail – Out 9M (previously out 14M)

We head back to headquarters this Saturday for the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, one of the elite races on the Australian racing calendar. This year’s edition promises to be a fabulous battle between the reigning Cox Plate winner Via Sistina, its stablemate, the Derby winning Aeliana, the iron horse Sir Delius, and the pride of Queensland Antino, a race worth the price of admission alone. The card is fabulously supported by a host of Group and Listed to keep us enthralled.

TOTAL INVESTMENT – 18 units

R1- We kick off proceedings with a dash down the famous ‘straight six’ and I like one at odds, the resuming Acid Wash. This lightly raced 5yo from the astute Clinton McDonald yard was narrowly beaten at its only attempt at the Flemington 1200M and won its first up run last prep on protest after copping plenty of interference throughout that race. The race map looks to suit; Ben Melham won on his only ride on the horse and the $17 currently on offer looks a great play to me.

She’s An Artist has very good ability and will be tough to beat, if she repeated the run when winning here 3 starts back then they all have their work cut out. That said, there are a couple of concerns with her, she may be a risk at a strong 1200M, she had a slow post-race recovery last start, and the $2.70 is a tad skinny. I’d suggest she starts around the $3.50 mark.

Persian Spirit did us a great favour when winning at 50/1 first up, he showed that day that straight track racing suits him, it goes well at the distance and Harry Coffey has an excellent understanding of the horse. It is extremely rare for a horse to have never missed a place in 13 starts, testament to how honest this fella is. He has an undeniable chance again although he will be hard in the market this time around.

Stolli Bolli is honest and will be thereabouts, he gets JMac to steer which will demand market respect, I just couldn’t take $4.60 about him.

Backing #14 Acid Wash (1.5 win units)

R3- A tricky middle-distance race for 3yo’s potentially on a Derby path, not a race I’m overly enthusiastic of getting involved in given the many unknowns.

Last start Waller trained winner Officiate is my on top selection, his at Canterbury recently suggested he was looking for this longer trip. The Justify breed are suited at 1600-2000M, he draws perfectly and gets JMac.

Kakkoii, from Japanese parents in an interesting runner and one I’m keen to monitor from a future staying perspective. His name means stylish, cool, and attractive, lets hope for connections he turns out to live up to his moniker. This colt has improved at each start as the distances have increased, this journey should pose no issue. I also like that Shinn has looked to ride him wherever he could, an excellent sign of things to come.

Obvious has also enjoyed getting out in trip at his recent outings, being by Toranado it supports the distance being no problem. This is a step up in grade although he looks a progressive type.

Arabian Prince has ‘Derby’ written all over him. He had a debut run over 1800M and acquitted himself well that day, Mick Kent kept him quiet after that with a view for longer races. Watch for him late.

No Bet

R4- A nice bunch of 3yo fillies awaits us here, some heading to the Thousand Guineas, others with longer term plans for perhaps an Oaks.

Just A Journey looks the testing material, everything suggests it is appreciating the rises in trip, he gets JMac to steer, is drawn perfectly to have options and the stable are flying. I would like to be getting $4, not sure if we will with the JMac tax.

Lathlain is a horse that I can see improving dramatically off its latest effort. That day he was well backed when the markets went up and things went from bad to worse after that, wide run, no cover, a fast tempo etc, all contributing to a below par performance. Micky Dee goes on and from a more favourable barrier he will get a nice run and be looking to finish strongly late in the piece.

Yum is racing well, its racing pattern supports it going back from the barrier and running home late. Mott knows it well and he will give it every chance.

Spicy Lu was good behind Yum last start and will continue to improve as the races get longer, it’s a definite chance.

Backing #5 Just A Journey (1.5 win units), #8 Lathlain (0.5 win unit)

R5- My bet of the day fronts up here with Miraval Rose, this Begg trained mare was excellent last start and should continue in that vein of form. I think it either leads or sits leaders back, and off a moderate tempo should be very strong to the line. Lots of positive indicators around distance, track, jockey, and stage of prep. Loving the $8 available also.

Miss Aria is a mare that can pull out a huge run with the right conditions. She is hard fit after 2 runs back, draws perfectly, and Shinn is to ride. Her negative is a poor Flemington record.

On Display was plain last start after an excellent win first up. If she can return to her best, then she is a chance.

Movin Out can improve off its first up effort and can run into a place.

Backing #2 Miraval Rose (3 win units)

R6- A race where I am torn between 2 very good gallopers, the new kid with untapped potential Rosberg, and the exciting filly My Gladiola.

I do have a millimetre of preference for Rosberg, only because I think the weights are too close. Both are outstanding horses with fabulous upside.

There are others that are also very nice horses in this race, I’ve just got Rosberg and My Gladiola very high up in my ratings. Rosberg might well be superstar class.

Minor claims to Legacy Bound, Jimmy Recard, and Tentyris.

Backing #6 Rosberg (1.5 win units), #8 My Gladiola (1.5 win units)

R7- The Lexus Bart Cummings named after a goliath of Australian racing and winner of 12 Melbourne Cups, which is appropriate as the winner of this race gets automatic entry into the great race.

With that in play the stakes are even higher here, and timing is the absolute key. I’m going to have a small play on Berkshire Breeze; I think the Maher team has targeted this race for the golden ticket. He has excellent stats when 3rd up, and a very healthy record around track and distance. Around the $10 mark he is worth a ticket.

Gilded Water is a lightly raced promising stayer who will makes its own luck from up on the speed, he will give a great sight although the $2.60 is very lean.

Fernao is an outsider that I think will improve with 2 nice fitness runs under its belt, it is looking for this trip now.

Mormona and Revelare are also live hopes in an interesting race.

Backing #6 Berkshire Breeze (1.5 win units)

R8- The race of the day and what a spectacle it promises to be, a real battle of tactics.

I have the 2nd favoured of the Waller pair on top, Aeliana. This mare showed she is top class when donkey licking the boys in the ATC Derby. Its 2 runs this time in have both been excellent given she had bigger fish to fry later in the campaign, and that time starts now. The barrier is another big plus, Damian Lane will sit just off the speed, one off the fence and he can press the button whenever he likes. The $5 is very appealing.

Via Sistina is the obvious danger, her win in last year’s Cox Plate was one for the ages. My concerns with her are barrier 1 (getting buried), is she going as well as she was, and the $2.40. She is too good to dismiss though.

Sir Delius was super last start and will sit prominently on speed, and it showed real grit to win, the question is if that flattened it. It might just be an iron horse.

Antino must go in; it can pull out a spectacular run at times but will need to against this lot. The stable is very bullish about its prospects though.

Backing #7 Aeliana (2 win units)

R9- We get to see the return of another top-class performer here with War Machine. This son of Harry Angel arguably should have gone through undefeated in its last preparation, only a woeful ride from Declan Bates cost him that honour (yes it still hurts). Amazingly he has never raced at Flemington although the straight race and how it is set up should play right into its hands. I see him tucked in behind the pack just off midfield and exploding past them at the 150M mark to win convincingly.

She’s Bulletproof loves the 1200M and went super at her only run at the track, she is unbeaten 2nd up and could be the knockout if there is one.

La Fracas will be another thundering home late, it boasts a 54% strike rate, it has also won 6 of 6 at the 1200M.

Perth visitor West Star and the Hawkes trained Airman have outside claims.

Backing #1 War Machine (2 win units)

R10- We round out a fabulous day’s racing with my best value bet in the shape of Air Assault. This SA visitor isn’t coming here for the scenic trip I can assure you, the Gluyas team have an excellent record when bringing their horses over the border. Whilst it has never won first up, it has run some excellent races when fresh. He will race on the speed and be very tough to the line, the $16 appeals greatly.

Media World was good when resuming in the Bobbie Lewis and goes well 2nd up, he strikes an easier field here, it will be a tough nut to crack.

Von Hauke is ready to produce a big run and will run well as will Enxuto who is always thereabouts.

Backing #8 Air Assault (1.5 win units)
