Ballarat 6/12/2025

Track – Soft 7

Rail – True (previously out 9M)

Ballarat Cup Day and great fun will be had, I’m very confident of winning with some nice value plays on the card.

R1– The day kicks off with a small field, with all but one being a chance of winning.

I’ve settled on the resuming Savannah Chill; this lovely Savabeel filly was good when winning on debut at a Sandown midweek, then at her next start drifted alarmingly in betting and ran accordingly a fortnight later, she was immediately spelled. She has won both her jump outs in preparation for this, and I think she is worth a small ticket around the $10 mark.

The favourite Maldini was a good winner last time out and is drawn to get a gun run here, she is the obvious danger but the $2.30 is too skinny for my liking.

Mostly For Show and Wrigley Field are also strong hopes off last start victories.

Backing #7 Savannah Chill (1 win unit)

R2- I liked the first up run of Legacy Bay and think she can return to the winners list here. She has good depth to her form and I see her taking up a more positive position in this race and being tough to beat.

Gracie’s Rain was an excellent winner on resumption when leading all the way, there is a lack of tempo again here which will assist her greatly. I think one of the two will win.

Sea Poem and Actuality are chances but haven’t fared well in the barrier draw, that’s an obstacle that will make it hard for them to win.

Backing #8 Legacy Bay (1.5 win units), #2 Gracie’s Rain (1 win unit)

R3- Like the first race there are many chances here. The Stokes trained Ground Control comes out on top, he won on debut and then went for a spell, at his first run back he missed the start but wasn’t disgraced when finishing 3rd. His win at Pakenham last start was very soft and he did it in the style of a nice progressive horse, he goes close again he with natural improvement.

Kagemusha has improved at every run this prep winning two and running 2nd at its only other start, he will run another honest race here.

Prince Tycoon has had 2 nice fitness runs and is ready to peak here, Mott goes on first time which is a big plus. The barrier and race map look to suit also.

Harry’s Yacht is a nice horse who is racing well, the 2 big negatives with it are the price and the 3 unplaced runs when 2nd up. He can win but ill be opposing him at the $2.25.

No Bet

R4- Somewhere arrives here 2nd up after an encouraging run when resuming, it was given little chance that day and still managed to be beaten only a tad more than 2 lengths in a much harder race than this. The outside barrier won’t be too much of a hinderance as it will go back and run home late. The $11 is juicy against this lot.

Dark Simba was a good run in the same race Somewhere contested and its closing sectionals were the best in the race; he has an excellent 2nd up record and will be a leading contender.

Extreme Virtue was ok behind Grid Girl at Cranbourne and is undefeated from 3 attempts 2nd up, it’s a live hope.

Bright Stripes is grossly out of form but a return to its best would have him as a chance here, at $81 you don’t have to have that much on them.

Backing #9 Somewhere (2 win units)

R5- The Moody/Coleman trained Codigo appeals here, his two 2nd placings recently suggest a win isn’t too far away and I particularly like the booking of young Emily Pozman who has shown good ability recently and her 3kg claim will be a huge help. He should race just off the pace and be strong late, the $8 currently on offer is over the odds to my eye.

You’re Two Vain is unbeaten from 4 starts and rises in grade but drops in weight here, he’s a real trier and is a clear 2nd pick. The 14 barrier does throw some shade on it but he is good enough to overcome it.

The resuming Zouper Fund is building a nice record and must go in, as does Demojo who loves the trip and will relish a heavy ground if things deteriorate.

Backing #2 Codigo (2 win units)

R6- A very tricky affair fronts up here and I can’t find a standout bet.

For the record I have Puglia on top, she struggles to win but is honest and rarely runs a bad race. She has an excellent record at track, distance, track/distance, and 3rd up, never missing a place at each of those attempts.

Royal Flare was a very good winner at this track in heavy going on debut, if he can take that step up to class 3 company then he will be a tough nut to crack.

Ten Warriors is a 9-start maiden and is too good a horse for that tag to remain, he was a certainty beaten last start and could blow this lot away with better luck.

Shystar was a good winner when resuming, she is lovely lightly raced filly with nice scope, it wont surprise if she wins.

No Bet

R7- The best bet of the day presents here with Major Share, this fella is a deadest winner, he loves the trip, Tom Madden has won 6 races on him and knows him well, flies 3rd up and has form around horses of the calibre of Oak Hill, Bossie Nic and Rey Magnerio, the latter would give these some hurry up.

South Of India is a multiple 2nd up winner who gets in very well at the weights, it’s going into the quaddy and is the clear 2nd pick.

Carbonados was a nice winner first up and has good ability, the worry is his 2nd up record, I couldn’t take $3.20 with that in play.

Wiggum has returned in good shape and arrives here from SA, he ran a nice 3rd behind Major Share when visiting in January and the stable have a good record when travelling their horses. Wet track is a worry perhaps.

Backing #3 Major Share (3 win units)

R8- In a race devoid of any real speed I like Howlin’ Rain to repeat its last start effort where it dictated terms and raced away with the Moe Cup. This is a similar race, Logan Bates takes 2kg’s off and from the rails I am hoping he controls the race and kicks away on the corner.

Party Crasher is lightly raced and is building a nice record, he will run well, able assisted by Beau Mertens who is riding in career best form.

Navy King is a chance but has a wide draw to contend with, and Liberami is ready now after 3 runs in and loves affected ground.

Backing #2 Howlin’ Rain (1.5 win units)

R9- The highlight of the day, the Ballarat Cup, and I like Statuario at a price. He was unlucky not to win the ‘greys race’ on Oaks Day and then never got a crack at them when running last at Cranbourne. He will have nice energy reserves off that and the $15 looks appealing.

Saint George has raced in better company than this an will appreciate the step up in trip, whilst the barrier is his biggest obstacle he has the class to overcome it.

Poison Chalice is back from last Saturday and that will have topped him off for this. He will be around the money somewhere.

Berkeley Square won at its only start at this track and has been freshened for this, he excels on wet tracks and must go into the quaddy numbers.

Backing #9 Statuario (1.5 win units)

R10- The lucky last, and we are pinning our hopes on Waimarie. This mare has been racing ok without winning in Sydney and has been sent south again in search of a wet track which it finds here. She will park up near the speed and look to charge at them at the 200M and hold on late in the piece. It s also a winner at its only start at the track.

Grid Girl has really found her form recently and can go on with it here, the claim will be a help as will the soft track.

Sunshineinmypocket can be win but the price and barrier aren’t to my liking.

Others with claims are Sought After who will improve off recent efforts, and Seafall who is a flukers hope and may pull out a big run fresh at huge odds.

Backing #12 Waimarie (1.5 win units)
