Selections and best bets from Chris Scholtz for the Randwick meeting on January 27 plus Trial Watch and Blackbook runners.
Best Bets
RACE 5: (6) CASTILLIAN – Former Victorian has been building nicely since joining the Pride stable and profile indicates he is ready for a peak performance at his fourth run back. Tough run when three wide last time over 1400m sets him up nicely for the step to a mile in an average field for this class.
RACE 7 (6) WAIHAHA FALLS: Showed his true ability over this course and distance with surging last to first to win in a BM100. His Group form and liking for this course made this an obvious target race and hold no qualms about him going five weeks between runs as he is best on the fresh side. Genuine pace will set this up for his strong finish.
RACE 8 (10) UNION ARMY: His first two runs after a spell suggested he was heading into his best prep and he duly delivered third up with a booming finish to score over 1200m at Rosehill in good time on January 13. He was dominant through the line and should not be bothered by a 2.5kg rise in weight if he holds that form.

Why They Can Win….
RACE 1: (6) SWITZERLAND – Has looked the part in his trials. Should get every chance from good draw.
RACE 2: (13) MAGNATEAR – Comes off strong placing in good form race. Liked his late work last time.
RACE 3: (13) SYRIAN STAR – Gave away too much start first-up. Better placed this time.
RACE 4: (2) BATTLETON – Wide gate cost him in strong Magic Millions race. Hard fit for return to his right class.
RACE 6: (6) LOUISVILLE – Deserved 1800m win last time and drops nicely in weight. Has always needed 2000m.
RACE 9: (2) HIGH BLUE SEA – Terrific turn of foot under big weight first-up. Rates to win again with expected improvement.
RACE 10: (3) EITHER OAR – Honest mare with strong course and distance form. Goes well for apprentice rider.
